The Instituto de Medicina Tropical “Alexander von Humboldt” (IMTAvH) is one of the leaders in research in Peru.  As such, the institute offers foreign students and medical professionals multiple learning opportunities regarding infectious diseases and tropical medicine, in both clinical and research settings.  The institute is home to physicians and researchers who are world-renown for their work in several areas of tropical medicine.

IMPORTANT.  All activities are carried out in Spanish.  There are no options for simultaneous translation into another language.  For those medicine students that do not speak Spanish, refer to information on the Lumbreras Tropical Medicine Course.

 Clinical Rotations

Clinical rotations are preferably scheduled between the months of May-December.  We recommend rotations span at least 4 weeks, but the duration is up to the interested student.  Acceptance for rotations is subjected to availability of vacancies per month.  Prospective applicants must keep in mind that for the past 5 years vacancies for rotations have been filled 6 months in advance, in some cases even a year in advance.

The rotating student will take part of clinical activities alongside our team and other students, seeing adult patients in the infectious diseases/tropical medicine service

  Laboratory Rotations

Laboratory rotations are preferably scheduled between the months of May-November and can take place in the parasitology laboratory, clinical mycology laboratory and the leishmania laboratory within the Leishmania and Malaria Unit.  These rotations last from 1-4 weeks, but the duration is up to the interested student.  Acceptance for rotations is subjected to availability of vacancies per month.  Prospective applicants must keep in mind that for the past 5 years vacancies for rotations have been filled 6 months in advance.

The rotating student will participate in all laboratory activities alongside the laboratory team and other students/professionals.  All activities are carried out at the IMT AvH at Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia in the city of Lima, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

At the end of the rotation a certificate of attendance or an evaluation form can be issued according to the requirements of the student’s university of origin.

 Research Rotations

Research rotations can be scheduled for any month.  A minimum of four weeks is recommended.

The first option is for the student to participate in active investigations in the institute.  In this case the application must be evaluated and approved by the Principal Investigator/Laboratory Head.  The main lines of investigation in the IMT AvH are; Tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS, HTLV-1, malaria, leishmaniasis, diarrheal illnesses in children, and bacteriology (brucellosis, bartonellosis, intrahospitalary infections).  Participation of the student in these investigations is a decision left entirely to the Principal Investigator/Laboratory Head.

A second option is for the rotating student to have a financed research project.  It is not possible for the IMT AvH to finance research projects.  The rotating student will have to contact members of the IMT AvH and secure a mentor prior to starting the rotation.  If necessary, the research project will have to be evaluated and accepted by the mentor, the institute’s Steering Committee, and the Ethics Committee at UPCH, before it can be executed.  The rotating student will be the only party responsible forcarrying out this paperwork.  Bear in mind that these approvals usually take approximately 2 months to be completed.
