Experimental Microbiology Laboratory

Mission:

1. To provide diagnostic services to patients of the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia and those referred from other hospitals in the country

  • Since 1985 Experimental Microbiology Laboratory has conducted microbiological diagnosis of TB, Malaria Geimsa by staining and / or Wright.
  • Carrion disease whose agent is Bartonella etológico bacilliformis, using microbiological, immunological and molecular tests.
  • Cat scratch, trench fever, bacillar angiomatosis etc. whose aetiological agents are the other Bartonellas by crops

2. To provide training to:

  •  National or international health personnel
  •   Undergraduate and post-graduate health sciences students from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and  other universities.
  •   Members of native communities.

3. To develop research involving highly trained human resources and using new and innovative techniques.

Research lines:

  • Microbiological, immunological and molecular studies of Bartonellabacilliformis and other bartonellas.
  • Biological control of Dengue, Malaria, filariasis with Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) and with the participation of the community using local alternatives for production (coconut, asparagus, cassava, potato etc.).
  • Statistical modeling and for the prediction and monitoring of infectious and tropical diseases using geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Evaluating new formulations of Bti, Btk and Btt for larval control vector of tropical diseases and agricultural pests.
  • Evaluation of repellent, larvicide and adulticide effects from extracts and essential oils from plants to control agricultural pests.
  • Evaluation of larvicide and adulticide effect from chemical insecticides to control agricultural pests.
  • Evaluation of the biocidal effect of copper, latex, chitosan, etc.
