On November 28, 2019, the Symposium: “Humboldt, Climate Change and Health” was held for the celebration of the 250 anniversary of the birth of Alexander von Humboldt. The organization was in charge of the Instituto de Medicina Tropical “Alexander von Humboldt” (IMT AvH) in collaboration with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Symposium was divided in 3 blocks: (i) “Climate change and its effects on health: Generalities and Global Situation”, (ii) “Climate change and its direct effects on health in Peru: Extreme weather events”, and (iii) “Climate change and its indirect effects on health in Peru: vector-borne diseases and food security”.  Thanks to the German Embassy, we were able to have Dr. Axel Kroeger as a guest speaker, who is a Professor at the University of Freiburg and a member of the special program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases of the World Health Organization (TDR-WHO). In addition, we had another international speaker, Dr. Volkhard Kempf, Director of the Institute of Microbiology at the University Hospital of Frankfurt, with whom we currently have collaborations on Bartonella projects.

The Symposium was a fair tribute to the German scientist, Alexander von Humboldt, who was a visionary, whose ideas regarding nature, climate and the repercussions of human actions on the environment are now keenly pertinent, when the planetary climate system is undergoing drastic changes. It was a unique opportunity, where we wanted to generate awareness of Peruvian health vulnerabilities, to guarantee that existing opportunities are used to benefit people's health, especially in the most vulnerable populations.

In a special way, we thank the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany for the collaboration and support throughout the development of the Symposium.
