"GENOMICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE OF BACTERIAL PATHOGENS" COURSE ORGANIZED AT UPCH COURSE CO ORGANIZED BY THE FACULTY OF SCIENCES AND IMT-AVH WILL TOOK PLACE AT UPCH BETWEEN 3 AND 8 MARCH

Lima March 10, 2019. On March 3, 2019, the "Genomics and Epidemiological Surveillance of Bacterial Pathogens 2019" course began. It was organized by the Faculty of Sciences at UPCH and the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt, in collaboration with the Wellcome Advanced Course and the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Pablo Tsukayama of the Laboratory of Microbial Genomics along with Dr. Jorge Arévalo (Molecular Epidemiology Unit) and Dr. Abraham Vaisberg (LID-UPCH) were in charge of welcoming the 20 participants of the course from all over Latin America and 6 instructors from Argentina, Costa Rica and the UK.

The course was designed to provide the necessary skills to generate and interpret next-generation sequencing data in a public health environment. This year's course had a strong emphasis on antimicrobial resistance and endemic pathogens from Perú and Latin America. Participants were trained in the latest laboratory methods and computational techniques for the analysis of next generation sequences and genomic surveillance of bacterial pathogens.

The activities took place between March 3 and 8 at the Molecular Epidemiology Unit (UEM) facilities and the Research and Development Laboratories (LID) of the Faculty of Sciences and Philosophy (UPCH). The course featured renowned local speakers such as Dr. Patricia García of the UPCH Faculty of Public Health and Dr. Ronnie Gavilán of the Perúvian National Health Institute (INS).
